A lot of people are confused about the meaning of “demisexual.” Demisexuality refers to having a sexual attraction to a person who shares a strong connection or emotional bond. This is in contrast to most people who can have a sexual attraction to any attractive person they see in public, on TV or elsewhere.

Demisexual Meaning

A demisexual individual may have sex with their partner or they may not. If they choose to engage in sexual activity, the desire is often weaker than most individuals. Sexual desire may never happen, either, but a strong connection is necessary in order to consider any form of sexual activity. Even if a demisexual person has sexual desire, they may not act on it.

Demisexuality and Relationships

A demisexual person doesn’t have to be romantically involved with someone in order to have a close bond with them. This close relationship could be a close friend. For some, a bond can happen rather quickly, while others take years to experience this close type of relationship. You might stay with someone for a short time and develop feelings for them. At times, it’s an instant connection. However, it can take getting to know someone for a while before you feel any sexual attraction for them.

Similarities Between Demisexual People and Others

There are some similarities between demisexual individuals and others. For instance, a demisexual person may seem similar to an asexual person. Asexual people generally do not want to have sex. However, there are some who will engage in sex (albeit rarely). Individuals who are grey-asexuals experience sexual attraction less frequently, can have a low sex drive and be attracted to others because of specific reasons. Sapiosexuals are sexually attracted to the mind or intelligence of another. This is not based on physical attraction. Pansexuals are attracted to a number of people, regardless of sexual identity, orientation or gender. They may prefer males over females, but they are generally attracted to both in varying amounts.

What Are Bi-Curious Women?

Bi curious women are women who are exploring bisexuality for the first time. In other words, they’re pretty sure they’re not entirely straight, and they’re interested in experimenting with bisexuality.

Being bi-curious doesn’t necessarily mean that the end result is always identifying as a bisexual, but it’s an excellent way to get to know your sexuality and your body better. So if you’re considering giving it a try, go for it!

What Are Bisexual Women?

Bisexual women are women who are not exclusively attracted to one particular gender. So, they are interested in people of their own gender as well as others. Contrary to popular belief, bisexual women may not only be attracted to men or women, but they may also be interested in nonbinary people or people of other genders.

Why They’re Not the Same

The term “bi-curious” speaks to potential and curiosity, which is the main difference between women who identify as bisexual and bi-curious. However, some people believe it plays into the misconception that these individuals shouldn’t be taken seriously and that the bi-curious sexual orientation is something a person has to explore before it’s real. This contributes to the stigmatization of the LGBTQ population.

If you choose to identify as bi-curious, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that! But as you continue to explore your sexuality, you may find that another label suits you better, such as pansexual (a person who has the capacity to form enduring physical, romantic and/or emotional attractions to any person, regardless of gender identity) or queer (sexual orientation is not exclusively heterosexual). You might even find that several terms define your sexuality best.

Whether you identify as someone in the LGBTQ community or not, educating yourself on the different terms people use to define their sexuality is important if you want to establish and maintain relationships that are built on trust and mutual respect.
